Day 1 – Arrival + Addis

Arrival and transfer in to hotel.

Day 2 –Addis – Bahir Dar

Fly from Addis to Bahir Dar and visit the Blue Nile Falls before lunch. In the afternoon, have a boat trip on Ethiopia’s largest water body – Lake Tana (3,600 Km Sq) to visit the island monasteries of Ura Kidane Mihret (14th Century AD) and Azwa Mariam (14th Century AD).

Day 3 –Bahir Dar – Gondar

Drive from Bahir Dar to Gondar – the 17th century capital of Ethiopia. In the afternoon, visit the Imperial Castle Compound of Gondar (UNESCO World Heritage Site), the ‘Bath of Emperor Fasiladas’, the church of Quskuam Mariam (17th century AD), the residence of Empress Mintwab, and the church of Debre Birhan Sillassie which is famous for its wall and ceiling paintings.

Day 4– Gondar – Axum

Fly to Axum, the most ancient capital of Ethiopia, in the morning. And, then sightseeing tour of Axum which includes visiting the Archaeological museum of Axum, the famous stele park (UNESCO World Heritage Site), the church of St. Mary of Zion which is believed to be the last resting place of the original Ark of the Covenant, the palace and tomb of King Kaleb and Gebre Meskel (6th Century AD), and the ruin palace of the Queen of Sheba (9th Century BC).

Day 5 –Axum – Lalibela

In the morning, fly to Lalibela – home of the 12th century AD rock hewn churches of King Lalibela. And in the afternoon, visit the second and the third group of churches of King Lalibela (UNESCO World Heritage Site).

Day 6–Lalibela

In the morning, mule back ride to the hill top semi monolithic church of Asheton Mariam (13th century AD). Getting to the top of the hill rewards with great and unforgettable scenery of the area. In the afternoon, visit the remaining second and the third group of the churches of Lalibela.

Day 7 – Lalibela – Addis

Fly back to Addis and have a half-day city tour of Addis that includes visiting the National Archeological Museum of Addis Ababa, Merkato – the largest open-air market in Africa, and driving to Mt. Entoto (3,200 meters) to have a panoramic view of the capital. In the evening, you will be invited a fare well dinner party at one of the best traditional restaurants of Addis  at habesha 2000 to see the folkloric dances of the Ethiopian people and to taste the variety of meals of the Ethiopian people.

Day 1 – Arrival

Arrive at Addis Ababa, be met by your guide at the air port and transfer-in to hotel.

Day 2 - Addis – Debre Markos

Drive from Addis to Debre Markos visiting the remarkable Blue Nile Gorge that is comparable in scale with the American ‘Grand Canyon’, and the largest monastery in Ethiopia – Debre Libanos Monastery (13th Century AD) where you can visit the mosaics by the most famous Ethiopian Artist Afework Tekle.

Day 3 – Debre Markos – Bahir Dar

In the morning, drive from Debre Markos to Bahir Dar and in the afternoon drive 32 km south of Bahir Dar to the remarkable Blue Nile Falls, and visit the cultural market of Bahir Dar. Late in the afternoon, drive 7 km to the Bezawit Hill to have a panoramic view of the town of Bahir Dar, Lake Tana and the outlet of River Nile from its source.

Day 4 – Bahir Dar – Gondar

In the morning make a boat trip on Ethiopia’s largest water body (Lake Tana – 3,600Km Sq) to visit the island monasteries of Ura Kidane Mihret (16th Century AD) and Azwa Mariam (16th Century AD). These monasteries are famous for their colorful murals and collection of manuscripts. After lunch, drive 185 Km North of Bahir Dar to the 17th Century capital of Ethiopia – Gondar.

Day 5 – Gondar

Day 6 - Gondar – Simien Mountains NP

Drive from Gondar to Debark (the headquarter of the Simien Mountain National Park), and after check-in to hotel at Debark drive 36 km farther to the Simien Mountains (UNESCO World Heritage Site) to visit the endemic mammal of Ethiopia – the Gelada Baboon, and the breathtaking scenery of the Simien Mountains.

Day 7 – Simien Mountains NP- Axum

Drive to Axum – the earliest Capital of Ethiopia, crossing the Tekezze Gorge.

Day 8 – Axum

Visit of Axum which is known for its huge stele cut from granite stones. The visit includes, the Archaeological museum of Axum, the famous stele park (UNESCO World Heritage Site), the church of St. Mary of Zion which is believed to be the last resting place of the original Ark of the Covenant, the palace and tomb of King Kaleb and Gebre Meskel (6th Century AD), and the ruin palace of the Queen of Sheba (9th Century BC).

Day 9 - Axum – Adigrat

Drive from Axum to Adigrat visiting the Yeha Temple (5th Century BC), and Debre Damo Monastery (5th Century AD), which is allowed only for male visitors and accessible only by using rope.

Day 10 - Adigrat – Mekelle

Drive from Adigrat to Mekelle visiting the rock-hewn churches of Abreha Atsbeha (10th Century AD) and Wukro Cherqos (10th Century AD).

Day 11 - Mekelle – Lalibela

Drive from Mekelle to Lalibela (home of the incredible hand carved 12th century rock churches of King Lalibela) through the scenic Wollo Mountains visiting the Amhara people.

Day 12 - Lalibela

Visit of the rock-hewn churches of King Lalibela, which are unofficially regarded as ‘the eighth wonder of the world’. In the morning, visit six churches that are grouped as first group of churches and in the afternoon visit the second and the third group of churches of Lalibela. These churches are Ethiopia’s top tourist attractions and are registered as UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 13 – Lalibela

In the morning, make a mule back ride to the hill top semi monolithic church of Asheton Mariam (13th Century AD). The peak of the hill offers a wonderful viewpoint to have a bird eye view of the surrounding area including the town of Lalibela, and in the afternoon enjoy a typical Ethiopian coffee ceremony.

Day 14 – Lalibela – Kombolcha

Drive from Lalibela to Kombolcha enjoying the breathtaking scenery of the Wollo Mountains.

PROGRAM: Historic Route of Ethiopia

DURATION: 10 days and 9 Nights

TRANSPORT: Surface and Flight

  • DAY 1 : Arrive Addis Ababa with Ethiopian Airlines. Transfer to hotel. Afternoon city tour of the capital. Including Entoto Mountains, with a very nice view over the capital, the National museum, St. George Church.
  • DAY 2 :Fly to Bahirdar with ET, and transfer to hotel for check-in. If time permits, go to visit Bezait place, with very nice view over Tana Lake and Blue Nile. Take an afternoon boat trip about 3-4 hours long on Lake Tana to admire the beautiful monasteries on the lake’s islands.
  • DAY 3 : Morning drive to admire the Blue Nile falls. Lunch in Bahir Dar. Afternoon drive to Gondar, city of castles and churches.
  •  DAY 4 :Continue the Historic Route of Ethiopia with a full day visit of castles and churches in Gonder: visit the castle’s compound, the Debre Birhan Selassie Church (light of Trinity) with wonderful murals, the King Fasiladas bath, the old usual monastery and the Empress Mentewab second palace.   • DAY 5 : Drive to Axum, beginning of civilization in Ethiopia (history of more than 3,000 years), admiring spectacular views over the Semien Mountains.
  • DAY 6 : Full day visit. Different archaeological sites, the bath & the palace of Queen of Sheba, tomb of kings and churches, among which in the church of St Mary of Zion (where legend says is deposited the Ark of Covenant, brought here from Israel by King Menelik I)
  • DAY 7 :Fly to Lalibela, defined as the 8th wonder in the world, and afternoon visit first group of the rock-hewn churches.
  • DAY 8 : Morning visit one of the churches out of the town, we propose an excursion by mules to the Asheten Mariam church, with spectacular views too. Or by car to the cave church of Naktule’ab. PM remaining churches in Lalibela.
  • DAY 9 : Complete the Historic Route of Ethiopia by flying back to Addis Ababa and visiting the Mercato, the biggest open air market in Africa and souvenirs shops.
  • DAY 1 0: Departure.
