Overview

Guassa Community Conservation Area is found in Amhara National Regional State, North Shoa Administrative Zone and in Menz-Gera Midir Woreda (district), 260km northeast of Addis Ababa by road. The area is managed through a common property resource system by the communities living adjacent to the Guassa Area. This indigenous management system has been traced back to the 17th century and is one of the oldest conservation management systems in Sub-Saharan Africa.

arriving lunchtime or late afternoon. Possible visit the church of Arbara Medanealem, located in the small settlement of Yigem, about 20km before the Lodge. The church houses several preserved mummies. Wolf sightings are possible in the late afternoon near the Lodge.

Day 2: From the Lodge you’ll have the chance of wolf and gelada sightings.

Choose between a hike from the lodge, or a trip via the town of Mehal Meda to the northern part of the plateau. The latter option could be combined with a visit to one of the culturally interesting and architecturally attractive hill traditional Menz villages at Tebab.

Day 3: Depart from the Lodge

with the possibility of driving back via Ataye in the Rift Valley. The alternative road descending from the plateau passes through spectacular scenery featuring a group of carved stellae and an old city of the Sultanates of Yifat Nora, close to Shoa Robit. However, the road is currently under maintenance and will not be passable until completion. Ataye is approximately 35km from the Guassa plateau and 80km north of Tarmaber along the Addis-Dessie road. The return trip to Addis Ababa takes approximately one hour.
